The story follows Wang Sheng, a man from Taiyuan, who takes in a beautiful young woman despite his wife
Chen Shi’s warnings. Later, a Daoist priest tells him he’s surrounded by evil energy.


Suspicious, Wang Sheng spies on the woman and discovers she’s a demon: her face is green, her teeth like
saws, and she paints human skin before wearing it as a disguise. Terrified, he seeks help from the priest,
but the demon ultimately breaks in, tears open his chest, and steals his heart, leaving him dead.  


Chen Shi pleads for the priest’s help. The demon, now disguised as an old woman, is found and destroyed by
the priest. The priest then directs Chen Shi to seek out a madman for help. Despite humiliation, Chen Shi
obeys and swallows the madman’s spit. Later, she vomits out Wang Sheng’s heart, places it back into his
chest, and he miraculously revives.


Painted Skin warns of humanity’s folly in being deceived by beauty while ignoring the truth. It illustrates
how superficial allure can conceal evil and explores themes of desire, deception, and vulnerability, urging
the need for wisdom and discernment to see beyond appearances.
