Lanterns, meant to illuminate the darkness, ironically become traps for moths drawn to their own destruction. Red, a symbol of celebration, shifts to reflect the hue of blood.
The film depicts life in the feudal households of early 20th-century society, where the oppressive practice of polygamy seals the tragic fate of women.

The inspiration comes from the 1991 film Raise the Red Lantern 《大红灯笼高高挂》, directed by Zhang Yimou.
